Arrest Bush when he visits B.C., Amnesty tells Ottawa

Amnesty International Canada says the federal government should arrest former U.S. president George W. Bush when he visits British Columbia next week.

The rights body says both Canadian and international law oblige Canada to detain Bush and investigate him for war crimes and torture.

Amnesty Canada's secretary-general, Alex Neve, says Mr. Bush admits in his memoirs that he authorized the use of torture against terror suspects.

And the Democrats would come out WAY worse for it. A domestic prosecution would harm the Democrats too, but a foreign incident would rally swing voters around the Republicans in a heartbeat.

It would amount to handing them an issue to run on that could completely change the game in 2012 and lead to a Republican White House and Republican majorities in both houses of Congress.

Amnesty International called on Canadian authorities Wednesday to arrest and prosecute George W. Bush, saying the former U.S. president authorized "torture" when he directed the U.S.-led war on terror.

Bush is expected to attend an economic summit in Surrey in Canada's westernmost British Columbia province on October 20.

The London-based group charged that Bush has legal responsibility for a series of human rights violations in a memorandum submitted last month to Canada's attorney general but only now released to the media.

Bush cancelled a visit to Switzerland in February, after facing similar public calls for his arrest.
