A wealthy businessman whose marriage was in trouble offered $1 million to buy the wife of a close friend in a bizarre deal reminiscent of the Hollywood film Indecent Proposal, it was claimed in the High Court yesterday.
Brian Maccaba, 45, a father of six and "a millionaire tens of times over", fell in love with a young married teacher at a Jewish school he had founded, believing that she was decreed by God to be his soulmate, it was alleged.
He wrote a poem for Nathalie Attar in which, it is claimed by the defence, he refers to his offer of $1 million to buy her from her husband. It was written after she had rejected his sexual advances and her husband had refused the offer, the court was told.
Mr Maccaba's counsel claims that it was not an actual offer to buy her, just a "poetic metaphor".
