Gaddafi's son Saif offers to 'hand himself in' to International Criminal Court

Colonel Gaddafi's fugitive son Saif al-Islam today offered to hand himself in to the International Criminal Court in the Hague, according to a Libyan transitional government official.

The London-educated playboy, 39, is the last member of the hated despot’s family still feared to be at large in Libya.

Said and former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi are proposing to surrender to the International Criminal Court, a senior military official with the National Transitional Council said today.

Observers speculated the brutal demise of his father - who was beaten to a bloody pulp and possibly even sodomised after his capture before getting a bullet in the brain - may have prompted his move.

To anyone in Britain who still thinks of her Dad as a tyrant, IRA quartermaster extraordinaire, and all-round Mad Dog of the Middle East, Aisha Gaddafi would like to extend a cordial invite.

"Come to Libya, you are all most welcome," she says, when asked about her father's unique talent for planting thorns in the side of successive British governments. "I know what is said in Britain about my father, and most of it is just following a political agenda. So I would give the British people this invite: find out the real facts by coming and meeting us Libyans in person."

First though, meet Aisha herself, the only girl among the eight children that Gaddafi has fathered in between his other duties as Brotherly Leader, self-appointed Saviour of Africa and Guide of the Revolution. Dubbed "The Claudia Schiffer of North Africa" in the Arab press for her striking good looks, the 33-year-old is arguably the most photogenic of Libya's First Family, yet she is still very much a chip off the old block. A lawyer by training, her father's regime is not the only contentious cause she has spoken up for over the years. In her youth, just like her Dad, she was a keen supporter of the IRA, and three years ago, she was on the legal team that defended that other controversial Arab leader, Saddam Hussein.

Her other passion, though, is promoting women's rights in Libya, which is why she agreed last week to a no-holds-barred interview at her home, a huge, high-walled villa in a Tripoli suburb. At first, it feels rather like being in a Gaddafi version of a Hello! shoot. Flawlessly turned out in peach jacket, white trousers and designer jewellery, Aisha holds court in a vast drawing room decked out with family pictures, and later poses for photos on a huge, mermaid-shaped settee worthy of her father's extravagant tastes. Meanwhile, her three young children wander in - one of whom, three-year-old Muammar, is named after Grandpa.

Too much info on how Libya was 'won' by the west. Blair will piss his pants if Saif ever reaches The Hague. As will a number of other 'leaders of the free world'.

Neh. My best guess is he'll be dead before he ever gets to say a word at a trial. Like Milosovic now knows, the ICC-jail is deadly in itself.

Which will put the lie to the absurd argument that all these folks we're killing at random lately should somehow know they're being hunted and targeted and just turn themselves in. Saif may have far too much knowledge of the inner workings of his father's regime to trust to being represented by counsel and interrogated. Someone with a guilty conscience, itchy trigger finger and access to the right weapons will make sure Saif never gets within a hundred miles of a secure facility.

11. Milosevic was in the Hague for 4 years (2002 to 2006) and died of a heart attack.

It's not like he was assassinated the day he got there so that he wouldn't have a chance to reveal any information.

it's right next door, and he was on air quite some time here in Holland. But he was not in that bad a condition (although he did work up a temper during the trial), and his wife claimed that he had been given the wrong drugs for his heart condition. After which he suddenly died. And he's not the only one suddenly being dead and not saying a word; how about Saddam Houssein, Osama Bin Laden, Tariq Aziz and some other convenient usual suspects...

Anyway, I don't think Saif will be able to reach his destination (and chosen path of destiny) at The Hague.

23. Iraq isn't a member of the ICC. While I would love to have had Saddam and Tariq (along with

a few Americans we could name) tried by the ICC, unless they were caught in an ICC-member country or indicted for attacks in an ICC-member country I don't see how they could have been tried in an international court.

Tariq isn't dead. He's in prison in Iraq.

Saddam was captured in 2003 and executed in 2006. I wish he had been tried in an international court, but he wasn't killed while being captured or anything.

9. It will be a fascinating trial to watch if it happens.

The war crimes indictment against Saif Gaddafi has puzzled people since it was handed down. He was Gadaffi's son, but he was widely seen as a pro-democracy reformer who publicly clashed with his father in Libya even before the revolt, was generally supported by the Libyan youth, and never held any position in the Libyan government or military.

It will be interesting to see whether the ICC can actually convict him of anything at all.

The Libyans get rid of the last rallying point for the old order in a slightly more civilized manner than it got rid of his dad with, Saif get to live (however undeservedly) and the ICC get to show how important it wan't to be.

It's a shame that he and his wife didn't end up like his father. They didn't just torture that poor Ethiopian maid, they had a habit of abusing all their staff. Psychopaths!!!
