S Korea warned to drop US line

NORTH Korea today warned South Korea it could be kicked off six-party nuclear crisis talks unless it stopped toeing the US line.

Pyongyang accused Seoul of "playing the role of a spokesman" for Washington by "harping on the same string with the United States in the robber-like demand" for a complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear programs.

The warning came from the committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, a powerful state organisation in charge of inter-Korean affairs.

"If the South Korean authorities want to take part in the negotiation as a member of the six-way talks in the future (they must) take the independent stand for achieving peace and reunification of the country, siding with the nation and joining efforts with the compatriots, instead of dancing to the tune of outside forces."

4. Actually we breached the agreed framework

...first and engineered this entire crisis. It's as phony as the weapons of mass deception ploy to get into the Iraq war. The lack of objectivity in reporting this international crisis is just par for the course. The great cultural gulf between westerners and Korea makes it even more difficult to overcome. N. Korea needs energy pure and simple. That was the raison d'etre behind their nuclear program. The production of plutonium and the proliferation problem were incidental to that. N. Korea has uranium and needs to use it or starve. It was already suffering from crop failures due to several natural diasters. It's production of fertilizers, farm equipment, and irrigation has been curtailed by the lack of energy and now the American breach of the Agreed Framework of 1994. The Clinton administration had this under control. Rumsfeldt sabatoged the construction of the light water plants and then Bush cut off fuel deliveries and sharply reduced food shipments. Just another breached international agreement leading to a manufactured crisis.

5. Frankly, I'd be happy to see South Korea drop the US line

Since the current US line is one of unreasonable expectations.

the US wants CVID before they offer anything. Well, North Korea has seen what happens to countries that completely disarm-they get liberated.

I think that the Roh Moo Hyun administration is shifting away from the US line, as they are continuing to try and improve business relations between the two countries. Linking of train lines, investing in Kaesong, and continuation of family visits are important steps to take. What they need to do is urge other western nation s who have diplomatic relations with the North (like Britain, Canada) to put some pressure on the US to take a more humanist approach with North Korea and actualy try and negotiate with them.

Bush's strong personal loathing towards Kim Jong Il is a severe hindrance in his ability to set rational foreign policy when it comes to North Korea (never mind the lack of grey matter that hinders him when trying to set foreign policy in general).
