Texas town still suffers effects of heat, drought; water supply down to two weeks

The Texas town of Groesbeck is on the verge of running dry.

"We have about two weeks of water left," Groesbeck Mayor Jackie Levingston said. Her central Texas town, population 4,300, is one of the latest victim's of the state's ongoing drought.

A lack of rain and the summer's intense heat -- more than 90 days of triple-digit temperatures -- combined to dry out the Groesbeck water supply.

"We lost more water to evaporation than we were using this summer," Levingston said in a telephone interview.

Also, while I won't dispute the fact that as you leave the big cities and get to areas like say, Crawford TX the stupid goes up exponentially. 26. Couple of things that need to be addressed here

First, thanks for inviting us to leave Texas. I would have to say I actually would like to leave. However, many of us have responsibilities here, in my case, I can't leave my elderly mother and my wife's elderly grandmother. My wife and I are responsible for them because we are the only ones who live in the same community as them.

Secondly, I have looked at retirement to a very temperate climate like San Diego. Texas summers are brutal, and I would love to live in a comfortable climate. But my God, the cost of living is unreal there. My wife and I would have a difficult time on our state's pensions living in a decent, one bedroom apartment.

Third, I would have to argue that there are more people coming from out of state to Texas rather than California. I say this because of our low cost of living. It's been going on for years. My wife's family transplanted from Minnesota. I have more neighbors on my street from out of state rather than Texas. The DFW area has always been full of out of staters because of jobs and the low cost of living.

Fourth, and last, since we're going anecdotal here. Most people who come here from other states remark on how friendly the natives are here and they don't want to leave. You say Texans are not nice in California, but I have to say the transplants here are very friendly, and I believe it's because they follow the lead of the natives. I had a friend go to New York City, and he walked into a shop. He bought something, and the salesperson asked, "You're from Texas, aren't you?" My friend said yes, and remarked that he guess it was because of his accent. The salesperson said no, because he had manners and was friendly. I live in a very red area, and politically I am an outsider. But I still love the people here, the Tex-Mex food, and the general friendliness. This is not a bad state, and we're working hard to change the political climate.

My wife's family is from there. Minneapolis and St. Paul are wonderful big cities, people are very friendly. Beautiful scenery. I would love to spend summers there, and of course, my wife's family from there tells me they don't miss the winters!

To take back Texas. It's a matter of survival, on the plainest terms. Texas wasn't always the way it's been since Ann Richards lost to the Shrub. In some ways, it can never recover, but this might give a push to those who are still fighting the regressives. Best wishes, folks.

20. It was a very brutal summer, guys......

...brutal as hell! I felt like a prisoner in my home, and I have lived here all my life. The water situation is getting better as colder weather moves south causing more rain. I was surprised to see Groesbeck was low on water. I guess they only use surface water for drinking. I got a 2.5 inch rain Monday, the first such rain since early June, although we did an inch last week. Watering ponds for livestock are still dangerously low or dry. Trucks are shipping cattle northward daily because there is no hay supply for the winter here due to the drought.

The lake here where I live is still very low and we are hoping for winter moisture to fill it back up. It's so dry that it takes 2 inches of rain to soak the ground, so if we get less than that, there is no run-off, and the lakes keep dropping. I have confidence we'll fill the lake before next summer. It always does.

I wouldn't wish it on any state or region and the nation is weaker as a whole when a climatic catastrophe such as this happens.
