Poll: Support for Bush, Iraq war dropping (CNN/Time)

(CNN) -- As Americans express growing unease about Iraq, President Bush's job approval rating has taken a hit, according to a poll released Friday by CNN and Time magazine.

That development appears to be helping Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. He wins the support of 51 percent of likely voters, compared to 46 percent for Bush. In February, Bush was ahead of Kerry by two percentage points.

If Independent Ralph Nader is among the choices, Kerry gets 49 percent, Bush 44 percent and Nader 6 percent.

Bush's overall job approval rating fell from 49 percent to 46 percent since the last CNN/Time poll on April 8, while his disapproval rating rose from 47 percent to 49 percent -- the first time that more people disapproved of Bush's job performance than approved.

3. I Wonder If All Of The Talking Heads...

will say how strong Kerry's #'s are just like they did(a couple of weeks ago) for * when he was ahead? Will we see headlines like "Campaign Worried That Bush Is Not Catching On With Voters"? I think we will hear the same old BS... "Polls mean very little at this point in the race".

As it turns out in the American electorate you can still top 40% even if you are a full blow war criminal. That is discouraging.

9. Yes, what kind of person

answer the polls? The naive, the flattered, the ignorant, those eager to please. That is just one factor among many pollsters studiously refuse to face.

However I believe the pols own pols are more serious in some ways and yet remain infected by the same fallacies for many of the same reasons.
That is why equally questionable "focus groups" have come to replace those old pol polls gone public. When Bush is toast among the sheep respondents he is really toast. An honest poll about Bush would be measurement for a coffin.

It is the public interpretation and presentation of the results, in an obsequious deferring manner to the God President that is the most offensive. Trying to be non-partisan doesn't work. They shouldn't interpret at all and they should sharpen both the questions and the methods they use to elicit answers(sometime ANY answer at all).

They used to be selling their skills privately to pols. Now they have too many public masters(not to be confused with THE public) and have lost legitimacy much less credibility.

6. Don't forget that most Bush apologists

will NEVER admit he's a war criminal even if * was photographed sodomizing a pre-teen Iraqi detainee at Abu Gharib. Most of that 40% are these types of people.

7. this is still interesting. when Clinton-bashers spoke out against him

they lied about him (Vince Foster, etc.) and exaggerated the Clenis. the problem bush faces is that he's inept, inarticulate, aggressive and unjust... to name just a few things... after a while people realize they wouldn't really want a guy like this around the house. bush actually grates on peoples' nerves, by his very presence. we hardly have to complain about the guy... he's so obviously repulsive.

15. I'm waiting to hear Scarborough's spin on this

I'll bet that he will say that they expected this and that is just a result of the bad news and not really a trend. They will say that Bush still is liked by most of the people and that most of them support the war and Kerry is weak on defense and loved by the terrorists.

10. It is good news

However, I am so very afraid of all the dirty, dirty deeds that the Bush people pulled in 2000 that I am afraid to let myself relax. I am afraid that Bush will stay in office through some crooked means. But I certainly hope not.

it's just amazes me, the level of dislike for a man who has served his country, in one way or another, for most of his adult life. it's really discouraging when i see the anti-kerry posts. i think we're very fortunate to have senator kerry in this race, and i'll throw every bit of my support behind him. i just hope he announces his vp pick soon, and hopefully his numbers will improve even more.

John Kerry in the WH will be like a dim light at the far end of a long tunnel.

17. I just read somewhere that a number of Dems are ahead

in their Senate races. Also, Dems have a 13-point lead in the generic ballot question. I've never seen a margin that big.

Kerry has the big MO and could steamroll * all the way to the election. Consider: the VP selection (Clark or Edwards IMHO), the Dem convention, the Repub convention (could be a bust in NYC), the debates...
