Vilsack says FY2005 budget will require hundreds of layoffs

DES MOINES — A lean budget in fiscal year 2005 will force state government to slice its work force by more than 400 jobs, Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack said Thursday.

Who gets the ax, however, remains uncertain. Layoffs would be part of the mix, he said, but officials also are planning to cut positions vacated through early retirement and attrition. It could be weeks before they attach a solid number to planned job reductions.
