Thousands of Iranians ready for suicide raids

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Thousands of Iranians have signed up for suicide attacks on Israel, U.S.-led forces in Iraq and British author Salman Rushdie, a recruiting group said on Saturday.

Shi'ite Iran has strongly condemned the occupation of Iraq and voiced its outrage at damage to shrines in the holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala.

The father of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, condemned Rushdie to death in 1989 for alleged blasphemy in his novel "The Satanic Verses".

"Some 10,000 people have registered their names to carry out martyrdom operations on our defined targets," said Mohammad Ali Samadi, a spokesman for the Committee for the Commemoration of Martyrs of the Global Islamic Campaign.

1. Looks like another bogus OSP front

This story first popped up on DARPA's website on May 26th. From there a few obscure sites picked it up and now over a week later Reuters finds it. Googling around, I can not find any previous references to any of the people mentioned, or this 'new' group, or anything other than the original DARPA story. DARPR is part of the DOD. Looks like just another one of their attempts to make a bad situation even worse, maybe?

The headquarters for tribute to the martyrs of the global Islamic movement has announced it is ready to register the name of volunteers for martyrdom-seeking operations against the British and American occupiers.

Madam Firuz Raja'i-Far, secretary of the headquarters, announced this and said: As His Eminence the late Imam, God's benedictions be upon him, has graciously said the smashing of the culture of the East and West cannot be achieved in any way other than martyrdom. We also consider martyrdom-seeking operations as the only effective and useful strategy against the hegemony of global arrogance.

She added: Such operations have passed their test in the Iran-Iraq war and in Palestine and Lebanon. Today are also they regarded as the most effective weapon of bare-footed globe trotting Muslims. We are confident that expelling the British and American occupiers from Iraq is not possible in any way other than martyrdom-seeking operations.

She stated: The headquarters has started registering the names of volunteers for martyrdom-seeking operations against the British and American occupiers and is in the process of studying ways of sending volunteers and of consultation with officials concerned.

Raja'i-Far said in conclusion: The headquarters for tribute to the martyrs of the global Islamic movement has embarked upon extensive effort to explain the culture of martyrdom-seeking operations among the youth. The holding of a conference in tribute to martyrs on 13th Khordad <2nd June> is the first step taken by the headquarters.
