Linus Torvalds, the Finnish-born inventor of the operating system and a revered figure in the open-source world, says he is moving to town to oversee the software labs. In fact, on Tuesday, he was overseeing the installation of carpet in his new Portland home.
Torvalds, who did more than anybody to transform free operating system software from idea to reality, has been a virtual employee of the Open Source Development Labs for the past year.
Until now, he has been the absent godfather whose name is invoked when an adherent cites the ultimate authority in Linux issues. Now, he will be a more immediate presence."
