SAVANNAH, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush played down diplomatic aftershocks from the Iraq war on Thursday, praising "courageous leaders" who speak frankly and joking that a humble cheeseburger may help to thaw relations with France.
Bush joked that when he comes face-to-face with foes of the Iraq invasion behind closed doors at events like the Group of Eight summit here: "We go to different corners of the room and we face the wall."
Turning serious, he stressed that the United States and the other G8 powers "have too much to do in a world beset by terror, poverty and disease to allow a policy difference to prevent us from working together."
...
"Let's face it. Most people say, 'the United States and the world differ.' No, it's the United States and France, that's where the focus generally is."
But Bush stressed that US-French relations were excellent and joked that he had conveyed French President Jacques Chirac's praise for the food served at the summit to the chefs who prepared it.
"Of course I told the chefs. And they recognized that it's a heck of a lot better to hear the food is great from Jacques Chirac than George W. Bush," he quipped.
