Survey finds employers gearing up to add jobs

NEW YORK - U.S. companies are gearing up to create jobs at rates not seen since the height of the 1990s boom, a survey released Tuesday showed, adding to evidence that job growth will keep the U.S. economic recovery rolling.


Following two months of strong government payroll reports, the survey is a boon to President George W. Bush in the run-up to elections and will likely confirm expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise U.S. interest rates at the end of June as it moves to beat off emerging inflation.

Thirty percent of polled U.S. employers plan to add to their payrolls in the July to September period, the survey by Manpower Inc. showed. That is up from 20 percent a year earlier and 28 percent in the April to June period.

The survey hit its highest level of 35 percent in 2000, powered by the Internet-fueled boom.

I dont know about the broader economy but I work in MA which has been particularly hard hit by job losses and particularly in the tech sector, which is where these jobs are being added.

While as partisans we may want nothing but bad news for Bush, I still want good things for America and a good economy is a good thing so personally I hope this report is accurate.

The jobs being added here are high paying ones with good benefits. So hopefully this is good news for any DUer out there having trouble finding work.

I just got let go from my last temp job, so I'll check to see how the job market is doing. It will be a tough summer competeing against all the kids outa school. Remember flipping burgers is a manufacturing job, and temp jobs count as new employment. Mitt Romney will be of no help.

get me wrong, I'm all for job growth, but down here in the south I have seen one business close after another and manpower is used for temp jobs. My husband's construction company uses them for short term jobs regularly, but the jobs are usually not only short-term, but definitely no benefits. This isn't real job growth.

John Kerry (news - web sites)'s presidential campaign on Monday kicked off two weeks of focusing on the economy with a battery of statistics that aides say show there's good reason many voters don't feel as if the economy is improving.

The advisers said people are not optimistic because of slow job growth over the last 12 months, mediocre new jobs, wage stagnation and increases in costs for essentials. Among the statistics offered from federal agencies and private foundations to bolster their case:

• 1.6 million households filed for bankruptcy in 2003, 33% more than in 2000.

• 1.8 million people have been jobless for more than six months, the longest long-term unemployment since 1984.

• The typical family health insurance premium has gone up $2,630 since 2000, college tuition is up $1,207 per year and child care costs $2,050 a year for a two-child family.

The Overland Park, Kansas, company had previously said it would lay off about 2,400 workers this year, part of a bid to lower annual costs by $1 billion over three years and sustain profits in fiercely competitive markets for wired and wireless phone services.

That $1B/2400 workers is $416,000 per worker, or about $138,000 per worker per year.
