Annan says Iraq too dangerous for UN return

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) said that Iraq (news - web sites) was still too dangerous for the United Nations (news - web sites) to return to the country.

"On the security situation on the ground in Iraq, obviously I am extremely worried," Annan told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York.


A new car bomb attack in Baghdad on Thursday left at least 41 dead and Iraqi and US officials have warned that more deaths are likely ahead of the June 30 handover of power by the US-led coalition.


"I am grateful to the Security Council that they inserted the phrase that we could go in 'as circumstances permit'. As of today circumstances do not permit and we are monitoring the situation extremely carefully," Annan added.
