Imam found guilty of hiding terrorist ties

AKRON -- The leader of Ohio's largest mosque was found guilty of lying to become a U.S. Citizen on Thursday.

Prosecutors argued Damra lied when answering two questions on his citizenship application. The first asked to list memberships or affiliations with different organizations. He failed to list three groups the prosecution called fronts for terrorism in the Middle East.

A 1991 video was played for the jury that shows Damra fundraising for what was billed as a charity. The prosecution tied the group the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a group the U.S. Government classified as a terrorist organization in 1995.

The defense claimed Damra didn't have to list an affiliation with this group because they say he was not a member but merely helping to raise money for Palestinian orphans.

They should’ve said “widows AND orphans.” ;)
