White House Lawyer Questioned in CIA Leak

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House's top lawyer was questioned by a federal grand jury Friday in the criminal investigation of who in the Bush administration leaked the name of a covert CIA operative last year.

White House counsel Alberto Gonzales underwent questioning at the federal courthouse. He was the latest in a string of administration officials to be asked about the unauthorized disclosure of the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame, wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, to the news media.

"The president directed the White House to cooperate fully, and Judge Gonzales was just doing his part to cooperate," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan, who also has gone before the grand jury.

With the attorney-client privilege eroded so severely during Clinton's imbroglio with the Whitewater grand jury, what obligation was Gonzales under as far as disclosing what he knew? Everything Bush told him, as long as it wasn't related to his official duties as president?

I ask because that, it seems, would have been the only rational trigger for the president then spilling his guts to Gonzales, thinking (perhaps wrongly) that Gonzales was the appropriate lawyer for such a confidence. Why else would Bush have taken the step to secure private counsel?

16. Given that there were two reporters subpoenaed and their outlets...

are fighting the subpoenas and that subpoenas are only supposed to be served on reporters if there was NO other way to get the information needed, will the grand jury hold off with any indictments until after the battle has been fought in the courts re the subpoenas?

Rumor has it that the indictments are coming soon, I hope the rumors are correct.

and he said Fitzgerald was probably thinking they might testify without fighting the subpoenas. He said he doubted Fitzgerald would get into a court battle over it, so I'm guessing this won't delay any indictments.

IAAL, and lemme tell you, when you want to nail Mr. Big, you start by questioning his underlings and working your way up. Make them commit to their stories, then move up the chain. It looks like they questioned Cheney before Bush -- since Cheney has already been questioned, obviously.

So it looks like Fitzgerald is working toward building a case against Bush.
