<WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top architect of the Iraq war on Tuesday rejected a suggestion that the United States was stuck in a quagmire but said U.S. troops could be there for years, until Iraqi forces can defend the country on their own.
"We're not stuck," Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz told members of the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, where he faced skeptical questions on the feasibility of a smooth handover of power in Iraq on June 30.
In the Washington Post-ABC News poll, support for President George W. Bush's management of the war on terrorism has slipped 13 percentage points since April, to 50 percent. Bush says the conflict in Iraq is the central front of that war, declared after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Two months ago, the Republican president led Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, by 21 points when voters were asked which man they trusted to deal with the terrorist threat. Now 48 percent prefer Kerry, while 47 percent favor Bush.
However, 50 percent of respondents trusted Bush more to deal with Iraq, while 45 percent trusted Kerry more. >
