Col. Walter Herd, departing commander of 4,000 special forces soldiers from seven countries, said he could not predict when bin Laden would be caught, but saw the Saudi-born guerrilla leader running out of hiding places.


"We could find him this afternoon, we could find him a year from now, we could find him 10 years from now," Herd told reporters Thursday at a change-of-command ceremony at Bagram Air Field, a major U.S. base north of Kabul.


"But what I think we can do is to change the conditions so that he is no longer welcome here in Afghanistan.


"And if he spends the next 10 years, or 20 years, or 30 years, running through the mountains of Afghanistan looking over his shoulder, that's OK."

He's in a nice , cushy hotel somewhere. Or on a boat.

2. He was in the mountains on 9-11. Hope that's not really Bush's plan

I mean, Bush is failing, and I'm glad to see it, but I still wouldn't mind a bit of actual protection against our biggest threat. Bush didn't believe Clinton about him, and he let 9-11 happen. Now he's going to believe some commander who claims that UBL hiding in the hills is good for us, when that's where he was when he plotted 9-11.

Anyone know the story of the Old Man and the Mountain, who I am sure UBL is consciously emulating?

3. Osama's just a symbol.

It doesn't matter where he is, al Qaeda's still striking worldwide. Colonel Herd should ask folks in Madrid or Riyadh or Istanbul, etc., etc. how effectve the "treeing" of bin Laden has been in curbing al Qaeda. My God, we're being led by some ignorant people.
