"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno is making fun of him and conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly says he's "toast." But those slights to Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jack Ryan paled compared to the takedown former wrestling coach Dennis Hastert executed Wednesday.

The powerful House speaker canceled his appearance today at a Washington, D.C., campaign fund-raiser for Ryan, whose candidacy is threatened by the release Monday of divorce papers in which then-wife Jeri Ryan accused him of taking her to a New York sex club and asking her to have sex with him in front of others. Ryan called the allegations "ridiculous" in a June 2000 divorce filing.

The decision by Hastert, who is going to a leadership breakfast at the White House instead, caused the energy lobbyists who organized the Ryan event to postpone it. The future of another Hastert appearance, scheduled for a private fund-raiser for Ryan Sunday in Barrington Hills, also is uncertain.

Ryan's campaign denied that Hastert's cancellation from the Washington event was a sign of trouble.
