US Aids cheque marked 'return to sender' - SA

Hundreds of demonstrators marched on Thursday to protest American policies on Aids, accusing United States President George Bush of undermining efforts to treat and prevent the disease.

The demonstrations outside the US consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town were part of a series of planned International Day of Action protests in Germany, Cameroon, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the United States and elsewhere in South Africa.

By mid-afternoon, however, demonstrations had not materialised in Nairobi or in Harare. In Germany, activists said the protest was limited to a call for letters to be written to the US ambassador.
