Sen. (Zell) Miller to Speak at GOP Convention

WASHINGTON -- Georgia Sen. Zell Miller, the highest profile Democrat to endorse President Bush for re-election, will speak at the Republican National Convention later this summer, a congressional aide said Friday.

Miller drew a sharp rebuke from the dean of Georgia's congressional delegation, Democratic Rep. John Lewis, who called the senator's decision "a shame and a disgrace."

According to the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Miller will give his address on Wednesday night of the four-day convention in New York that begins Aug. 30. The Bush-Cheney campaign was expected to make an official announcement later in the day.

The speech by Miller, a former two-term governor, comes 12 years after he delivered the keynote address for Bill Clinton at the 1992 Democratic National Convention, also held in New York.

why he doesn't switch parties. :mad: He continuously and consistently speaks on behalf of the Republicans and derides the Democrats telling us how terrible we are. So if he doesn't find us aligned to his liking (which he expresses through his words and deeds), then SWITCH! Dammit!!!

Granted, my knee jerk reaction is what I posted above. But strategically, maybe we should consider telling everyone loud and clear that we are a party of inclusion and we embrace Zell Miller. Even though we disagree with his views, he has a right to speak his mind.

Commitee balance is often adjusted whenever the balance of the overall senate changes. It would be very likely that we would lose one seat on each commitee to reflect the "new" balance of the Senate.

Now, this reorg is fillibusterable (is that a word?), so they couldn't force it, but since it started with our own action it would look bad.

Alternatively, they could ADD one republican to each commitee (not both), which could be almost as bad.


The best thing to do is just leave him where he is and ignore him. He'll be gone in a few months anyway and kicking him out will only draw extra attention to it.

I don't know what happened to this idiot! I could MAYBE understand if he was running for office again, and he switched parties because Georgia seems to have changed to completely Pub. But he's getting out of politics, and retiring to his North Ga. residence (probably a tent in the woods to be with nature!) WHY IS HE DOING THIS?

Miller's recent book, "A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat," is now a national best-seller. In it, he assails members of his own party, including Clinton.

We need to publicly strip him of his Democratic membership and let it be known that we are a diverse party but not a party that tolorate a traitor. When Ronald Reagan was married to Jane Wyman, they adopted two children, a daughter Maureen, now deceased, and Michael. Jane Wyman got custody of the two young children when they divorced. I don't think they saw Ronald Reagan very often when they were growing up.

Then Ronald Reagan married Nancy and they had two children, Patti and Ron. I think I read somewhere that Patti didn't know that Maureen and Michael even existed until she was 9 or 10 years old.

Maureen and Michael were/are in the conservative camp.

Patti and Ron are much more liberal.

47. Sarah and Jim Brady spoke at the Democratic convention one year.

You'll recall that Jim Brady was the White House press secretary who was badly wounded when John Hinckley opened fire. His wife, Sarah, is a gun control advocate, and the two of them appeared at the Democratic convention (I forget which year). Jim Brady WALKED onto the stage to thunderous applause (He'd pretty much been in a wheelchair since the shooting).

Anyway, they're both Republicans, but the gun control issue obviously made them feel a lot closer to the Democratic Party. If you have a chance, read Sarah Brady's memoir, "A Good Fight," which has some revealing anecdotes about members of Congress, including one current vice president with a potty mouth.
