Fertility loss linked to men with mobiles

FERTILITY rates among men who regularly use mobile phones could be as much as 30% lower, vastly reducing chances of conception, according to new research.

The study - the first to indicate that mobile phones have a negative effect on sperm counts - found that men most affected were those who kept their phones in their trouser pocket, or in a belt holster.

The researchers, from the University of Szeged in Hungary, studied 231 men for 13 months, comparing the sperm of those who used their phones regularly with those who did not. Heavy users and those who carried their phones with them most the time recorded sperm counts nearly 30% lower than those without phones.

Dr Imro Fejes, who led the research, said: "The prolonged use of cell phones may have a negative effect on spermutogenesis and male fertility that deteriorates both concentration and motility."
