But Frederick's family has spent months trying to change the public perception of their son, and the six other western Maryland-based soldiers shown in the infamous photographs of abuse at Abu Ghraib prison.
"A photograph is worth a thousand words, but in this particular case, the photograph may have more than one meaning," Frederick's uncle, William Lawson, said Monday. "There's more to this than just seven GIs who have decided arbitrarily to make up their own rules."
The Web site http://www.freechipfrederick.com urges supporters to construct a large number "7" and wrap it with a yellow bow.
