US Secretary of State Colin Powell has arrived in Khartoum amid widespread calls for Sudan to end militia attacks on refugees in war-torn Darfur.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is due in Khartoum on Wednesday - and has said the UN Security Council may act if Sudan fails to tackle the crisis.
If Sudan does not protect people in Darfur "the international community has to do something about it," he warned.
In the past 15 months about one million people have fled their homes in Darfur.
Human Rights Watch urged Mr Powell to send a warning to Sudan's government over the "ethnic cleansing" in Darfur.
Mmm, too bad they don't have oil, then W would be in there in a jiffy to help out.
