'Fahrenheit 9/11' sets record (in Fayetteville, military town)

"Fahrenheit 9/11," a left-sided documentary that bashes the Bush administration's war on terrorism, wouldn't find much of an audience in a military town.

Or so they thought.

"This has broken all of our past records," said Nasim Kuenzel, an owner of the Cameo Art House Theatre. "The movie that I thought would make us hardly any money - I never thought it would break all the records."

Saturday and Sunday were just as busy, Kuenzel said, with nearly 1,000 tickets sold over the weekend. As many as 75 percent of moviegoers were soldiers or military families, Kuenzel said.

Many were like Natalie Sorton. She is 25 and married to an infantryman who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I want to see what my husband is fighting for," Sorton said Monday before going into the theater with a friend, Kathy Norris.

home of Camp Pendleton Marine Base. However, the surrounding towns are showing it. I think these theaters that aren't showing it will realize the mistake they made.

After Monday's showing, Sorton emerged with a grim face. She said she plans to buy the film on DVD and give it to everyone she knows.

The film changed her opinions on the war in Iraq by convincing her that oil and corporate interests were behind decision-making,

That's what we're up against. There are too many people who are afraid of having their fantasies of what America is shattered. They are WORRIED that things might be less that perfect. They are afraid of not being the beacon of freedom and democracy.

They want to be lied to, even if the lies make no sense, because they feel like their self image is on the line. I think there is too much nationalism in this country and has been for a very long time.

We need more military families to see this. While military families are making sacrifices and suffering losses, bu$h and his cronies are out on vacation, ripping off the taxpayer and pandering to their "have and have more" political base.

17. Yup, here in Richmond too

I tried to go see Fahrenheit 911 this last Monday night and it was sold out, so I will try again on Wednesday. Richmond, Va is a very conservative town. We will hold our first significant anti war demonstration this coming Saturday, but there were a few 'support our troops' rallies a year ago. So there seems to be a shift in mood here too.

This is great. A few days ago, Moore said he sold out in Fayetteville. The Freepers "debunked" him by proving that F 9/11 was only showing in one "artsy-fartsy" theater.

22. Just got the news! It's coming to Las Cruces, NM!!!! near White Sands

Allen Theaters skipped it and our little local independent, the Fountain Theater (foreign films, mostly), was going to get it in Sept. But......it starts FRIDAY for 2 weeks! I figure at about 200 a show, with 12 shows a week....that's nearly 5000 of us who won't have to drive to the one theater in El Paso!!

Also #1 nationwide, according to today's San Diego Tribune.

It set a weekend box office record for documentaries in San Diego with $341,974 worth of tickets sold in only 11 theaters (that's over $30K/theater). It also beat out #2, "White Chick", which showed in 22 theaters in San Diego, earning $274,753.

The average per screen take is over $25,000. That's twice the take of the closest Hollywood release. Any theater owner who turned down the film is eating his shorts right now. Maybe the next time a wing nut group calls on theater owners to pass on a release they'll slam the door right in their ugly, smug faces. "Our old record was 215 for a reissue a few years ago of ‘Pulp Fiction,'" Emerson said.

Before the 9 p.m. show the line from the box office packed the sidewalk from the theater building to the curb and down Seventh Street to the east.
