Kampala - At least 6 000 internally displaced people were left homeless on Monday after fire ripped through a displaced persons camp in war-ravaged northern Uganda, government and army officials said on Tuesday.
The fire, which broke out on Monday afternoon at Pabbo Camp, destroyed at least 547 grass-thatched huts, Pabbo County Council chairperson Christopher Ojera said by phone from the camp.
"A task force involving the army and some volunteers also pulled down roofs of another 705 huts to stop the fire from spreading," he added
A total of 1 252 huts were destroyed, and "at least 6 000 people are currently affected," Ojera said.
