Plant officials also said the layoffs were part of an internal reorganization plan announced after "poor financial performances" in 2001 and 2002. The plan focused on, among other things, discretionary spending and closing noncompetitive and under-used sites.
Numerous south Louisiana petrochemical plants have scaled back operations in recent years, resulting in thousands of layoffs. Many companies have shifted some operations overseas to take advantage of cheaper raw materials and labor.
