Steve Jobs, chief executive of personal-computer maker Apple Computer Inc. and animation studio Pixar Animation Studio, underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his pancreas during the weekend. The surgery was successful and Mr. Jobs will return to work in September, an Apple spokeswoman said.

Mr. Jobs, 49 years old, disclosed the news about his surgery in a memo that he sent to staffers at Apple, Cupertino, Calif., on Sunday. In the memo, Mr. Jobs told Apple employees that he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer, called islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which can be cured by surgery if removed in time. Mr. Jobs's tumor was diagnosed in time, he said, and he won't require any chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

7. I thought pancreatic cancer

was fast moving... and fatal. But am not familiar with current situations - is it possible to completely remove the cancer and stop its spread? If not, I fear that Mr Jobs will not have a long recovery/remission. :-(

10. Yes, it is often fast and usually fatal.

However, it all depends on when it was caught. Obviously, the earlier the better, not to mention that Jobs is likely to make sure he gets the absolute best and latest treatments. I haven't read literature on this for a couple of years, but there were a couple of new treatments that looked promising back then. They were both in experimental phases, however.

he is very lucky since over 90 pct pancreatic are not survivable. Like 98 pct fatal usually. I don't know the cell type.

18. My Dad had pancreatic cancer and pretty radical surgery called the....

..."Whipple Cut" to get at and remove the tumor back in 1996. They made the cut from back to front and pulled out all of his internal organs and placed them on an adjacent operating table. Then they removed his bile duct, and portions of every single surrounding organ. When that was done, they put the organs back into place and sewed him up. He went into the hospital weighing 165, and left the hospital two weeks later at 135.

But the surgery isn't the tough part...it's surviving the first six months that's the toughest. Of the other nine people that went in at the same time as Dad to have the same surgery, all but Dad died within the first six months.

Dad's 84 and still living, but he's had a tough time of it.

15. Steve Jobs Is An American Hero

Without him and many others like him, we'd be overly dependent on IBM for all of our IT needs. I saw a documentary on Silicon Valley, and people like Steve Jobs came from the 60s counter-culutre. Yep, Steve lived on a commune in his early days. He took that mistrust of the establishment into his business.

I'm hoping for a quick recovery for you Mr. Jobs.

29. Prognosis is really quite good

Apparently these cancers are usually caught early because the tumor makes hormones in addition to the hormones already made by the pancreas. The effects of the extra hormones are dramatic and unpleasant and not something one would ignore. Because of this, the tumors are often caught when they are only a few millimeters in diameter.

It's going to be a good trick to get a G5 in a powerbook. Those things get HOT! I just got a G5 XServe last month, and the thing has about 5 fans inside! (though they are VERY quiet fans). It's plenty FAST though!

35. IBM has already developed the low-profile 970FX chips for laptops

but I think they cannot yet meet the shipping demands. I'm not sure, but I think this may be the same chip Apple plans to put in the iMac, though theoretically they could put in a single, a lower-clocked 130nm 970 processor which could prevent heat problems. I'm guessing that they will use the older 1.6 GHz single chips, that have been clocked a little lower, in the new iMacs coming perhaps later this year.

I hope he will be okay. I had a friend die of pancreatic cancer at age 32. It has a very low survival rate. I hope that this story is correct, and that they caught it in time.
