Heinz Kerry: Four More Years of 'Hell' if Bush Wins

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Teresa Heinz Kerry, the outspoken wife of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry (news - web sites), pulled no punches on Monday in telling a rally what she thought of the Bush administration -- hell.

And later, discussing the war in Iraq (news - web sites), Heinz Kerry subtly questioned Republican President Bush (news - web sites)'s intellect, saying: "It's vital for anyone with intelligence to acknowledge mistakes and change positions -- hello."

When a Bush supporter with a bullhorn shouted "four more years" from the back of a large crowd packed into a downtown Milwaukee park, Heinz Kerry, who was introducing her husband, responded: "They want four more years of hell."

"Three more months!," she declared, referring to the Nov. 2 presidential election.

BELOIT, Wis. - John Kerry (news - web sites) was touting his plan to rein in wasteful government spending and balance the federal budget as his string of campaign buses wound into the Midwest.


"We can do this," Kerry said in remarks prepared for delivery on Tuesday. "We can return to the days where we balanced the budget, grew our economy and spent your money responsibly. We can balance our federal budget so you can grow yours."

Kerry promises to pay for all new government programs and cut the federal deficit in half in four years. To do that, he wants the power to veto individual spending decisions made by Congress and enforce budget caps with automatic spending cuts.

He planned to discuss his economic plans in a town hall meeting on Tuesday.

Ms. Jones said she could not understand why we (the media, etc) are focusing on a strong woman with views rather than the real issues at hand. Then Boortz turned around and blamed Kerry for Bush rapidly complying with the 9/11 commission's recommendations.

The corporate mainstream media seldom stray into territory that might cause discomfort to those who hold political and economic power, including those who own the media or advertise in it.

What follows are some common methods of media manipluation:

Suppression by Omission. The most common form of media manipulation is suppression by omission. The things left unmentioned sometimes include not just vital details of a story but the entire story itself. Reports that reflect poorly upon the powers that be are least likely to see the light of day. Thus the Tylenol poisoning of several people by a deranged individual was treated as big news, but the far more sensational story of the industrial brown-lung poisoning of thousands of factory workers by large manufacturing interests (who themselves own or advertise in the major media) remained suppressed for decades, despite the best efforts of worker safety groups to bring the issue before the public.

Often the media mute or downplay truly sensational (as opposed to sensationalistic) stories. Thus, in 1965 the Indonesian military--advised, equipped, and financed by the U.S. military and the CIA--overthrew President Achmed Sukarno and eradicated the Indonesian Communist Party and its allies, killing half a million people (some estimates are as high as a million) in what was the greatest act of political mass murder since the Nazi holocaust. The generals also destroyed hundreds of clinics, libraries, schools, and community centers that had been opened by the communists. Here was a sensational story if ever there was one, but it took three months before it received passing mention in Time magazine and yet another month before it was reported in The New York Times (April 4, 1966), accompanied by an editorial that actually praised the Indonesian military for "rightly playing its part with utmost caution."

Information about the massive repression, murder, and torture practiced by U.S.-supported right-wing client states such as Turkey, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, El Salvador, Guatemala, and others too numerous to mention is simply omitted from the mainstream media and thereby denied public debate and criticism. It is suppressed with an efficiency and consistency that would be called "totalitarian" were it to occur in some other countries.

in front of her name. You'll see that picked up on by the rest of the media outlets now. She'll never just be "John Kerry's wife" any more. She'll be labeled "the outspoken wife of John Kerry." Do you ever see a statement from them like "the zoned-out wife of Bush?" or "the doormat wife of Bush?" No, I didn't think so.

Well, I've always been labelled "outspoken" and I'm proud of it! These dinosaurs need to stop living in the 50's and get with the program. Women aren't going to take a backseat any more. Get used to it! (Well, I'm sure some women are still living in the 50's, but that's too bad for them.)

because you would think we'd have gotten beyond that since the 1960's when the second wave of the feminist movement began. I was 17 when my oldest sister, who was in college at the time, turned me on to feminist readings and learning about the subtle ways women are denigrated in this culture. When you see how something as "minor" as language can have a huge impact on how women are portrayed, it opens your eyes to other inequities. However, I do believe we have come a very long way in this country because of all the things my generation fought against and changed. I'm glad that my 30-year old daughter doesn't have to put up with some of the things I did.
