MEXICO CITY (AP) - Several documents collected as evidence against former President Luis Echeverria disappeared during a break-in days before charges were filed against the former leader, an official said.
Special prosecutor Ignacio Carrillo said his offices had been searched, several locks had been broken and the case file had been damaged. He said he has asked the attorney general's office to investigate.
Carrillo did not say the evidence was stolen, but used the word "disappeared." He first revealed the incident Thursday night. His office confirmed his remarks Friday.
Carrillo last month asked a judge to order the arrest of Echeverria and other former officials, accusing them of involvement in killing dozens student demonstrators on June 10, 1971. The judge denied the request but Carrillo has appealed the decision.
