Kerry Has 20-Point Lead in New Jersey, Poll Shows

Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry has widened his lead over President George W. Bush in New Jersey to 20 percentage points, a poll conducted for the Newark Star-Ledger newspaper shows.

Fifty-two percent of the 624 registered voters surveyed said they would choose Kerry, a four- term Massachusetts senator, if the election were held now, and 32 percent said they would pick Bush. Three percent said they would vote for independent candidate Ralph Nader or a third-party candidate, the Star-Ledger reported today.

In a May survey, Kerry, 60, led Bush, 58, by 6 percentage points, the Newark, New Jersey-based newspaper said. The latest poll was conducted July 30, after the Democratic National Convention concluded, through Aug. 4; it has an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

From what I can tell there HAS been an under the radar bounce in a number of state polls. NJ, PA, and FL among them. But AWOL is still the much beloved Chimp In Chief according to the Tim Russert's of the world.

7. Probably because in a lot of states where Bush* wins...

...he wins pretty big. Like Utah and Wyoming and Montana and the deep south; I could see that tempering a big bouce in other states.

it was a little strange there for awhile when polls showed very anemic support for Kerry. I think in a couple he was up by only 2 or 3 points.

But this is more like it! Now Bush can "fugeddaboudit!"

I did create a thread asking if Bush had a chance there, but I found it strange that a state that Gore won by 16% or so would have Kerry up by only 6 points or so. I never thought it was in play but the numbers were somewhat frustrating.

It seems like the convention has really strengthened Kerry among his base and those states that Gore won. That's something Bush has yet to do considering states like MI and PA are now showing Kerry with comfortable leads. On the other hand Bush's numbers in those states he won last time are pretty unimpressive. His convention may gibe him the boost he needs to solidify support among his base, but Kerry already has been holding onto leads among independents and I don't see why the GOP convention will do much to change their minds .
