COLUMBUS | The number of Ohioans who lost their homes at sheriff sales caused by foreclosures skyrocketed in 2003, with Montgomery County emerging with the highest rate of sales among the state's major urban counties.

Last year county sheriffs put up for sale more than 36,425 foreclosed properties, an increase of 26 percent from 2002 and a 57 percent increase from 2001, according to a study released Wednesday by Policy Matters Ohio of Cleveland.

Montgomery County fared worse among the counties when it came to foreclosures. Statewide, there was one foreclosure filing for every 78 households, the study found. In Montgomery County, the rate was one filing for every 54 households, according to the study.

Among 57 county sheriffs' departments that responded to the questions in the study, 31 ranked predatory lending as the first cause of foreclosures and sheriff sales and 16 cited job loss or a weak economy as the first cause.

in Humboldt county this year. I guess it has everything to do with <pardon me> location, location, location.

It's nice to see Ohio's state reps are aware of the problem and seem committed to doing something about it. But it does not help when mortgage industry whore, U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, from the I forget which district in Ohio, sponsors legislation that would preempt those laws and create all sorts of loopholes for predatory mortgage lenders.

I do so despise registration...

Of note is that the Dayton area, with the highest foreclosure rate and thus, presumably, the suckiest economy in Ohio, is among the most stalwart repuke bastions in the state. How can we get people like these to stop voting against their own interests?

12. Dayton/Montogomery County....a bit of geography for you

....the city of Dayton is pretty Democratic, but thats becuase of the large African/American community...sort of a little Detroit, plus some residual poor whites voting Democratic, too.

The suburbs, the white ones, are reliably GOP..including ones that have alot of blue collar folks. In fact this is one of the strongest GOP areas Ive ever lived in....

Based on stories that Ive seen these foreclosures seem to be concentrated in a zip code that is predominently black..sort of black middle and lower middle class....so the impact of these foreclosures are being felt by people who are already in the Democratic column, politically speaking.

We're certainly trying like crazy.

Actually, Gore took the county in 2000, but only by about 6,000 votes. We need 183,00 more votes to win this time.

I'm working at Dem HQ, am a precinct captain, co-chair the T-shirt- bumper sticker-pins-yard sign committee and chair our local Ohio Women for Kerry phone bank committee.

Lots of other DUers are helping, too; several were present at the protest this morning when Cheney spoke to veterans (what nerve, he with the 5 draft deferments).

On the bright side, we have over 2,300 volunteers in our database for Montgomery Co., we received our first supply of yard signs yesterday, and we're beginning to canvass neighborhoods, for the "personal" touch.

We've GOT to win this Buckeye state, so keep the faith, don't give up the ship, and all that other morale-boosting stuff.

We CAN do it and I refuse to believe otherwise.

We're taking our White House back and Ohio will be one of the reasons.

Anecdotal evidence--at the Dublin Irish Festival last weekend (suburb of Columbus, on the ritzy side), I saw many more Kerry stickers/buttons/shirts than ones for Dubya. (I was there pretty much opening to closing all three days)

Bush is another Hoover. More people were out of jobs, lost their homes, and let's not forget the Great Depression while Hoover was in. Unfortunately, history will repeat itself if Bush gets in for a second term. I was always suspicious about this: rush everyone into home ownership, just to raise property taxes, then raise interest rates so that the property values eventually drop and people's investments won't be worth a darn. Alot will be stuck with big fat mortgages that they not only won't be able to afford, but nobody will be interested in buying because of the property values. Bush needs to go most definitely.
