A British journalist abducted in Iraq has been freed by the hostage-takers, according to two news agencies. James Brandon had been held for 15 hours. His captors originally said he would be killed unless the US-led assault on Najaf was stopped.
The 23-year-old freelancer for the Sunday Telegraph was snatched from his hotel in Basra by gunmen. The decision to free him followed talks with radical cleric Moqtada al Sadr, who is fighting US troops in Najaf. "As a result of mediation by the office of Sayyed Sadr, the British hostage will be released and handed over to Sadr's office in Basra," one of the captors said earlier on a videotape.
