Poll: N.J. Governor's Approval Nudges Up After Disclosure of Homosexuality, Affair

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Gov. James E. McGreevey's approval rating has not suffered since he announced that he had an affair with a man and will resign in November, a new poll showed Sunday.
The governor's approval rating was 45 percent, 2 points higher than in a similar poll conducted two weeks earlier, according to the Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers poll.

The telephone poll of 400 adults was conducted Thursday and Friday nights. The error margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

McGreevey, who is married, announced his resignation Thursday. Sources in his administration named former McGreevey adviser Golan Cipel as his extramarital partner and said he had demanded millions of dollars to stay quiet.

but I don't think the reason for his resignation are because he is a homosexual but because he may have misused his office. If he had had any scandal involving his alleged lover and just announced "I'm a gay American" I think he would be fine--except of course his wife may have had to reevaluate their marriage--but that is a private matter.

Until he resigned from office last week for personal reasons, the Governor of the state of New Jersey was under investigation for public corruption.


He might still be.


To get to the Governor, federal prosecutors had go through his big financial contributors. So, they focused on one big financial contributor.


This financial contributor didn’t want a witness cooperating with the federal investigation, so he lured the witness into a trap, set him up with a prostitute, and videotaped the scene.


Yes, it is New Jersey. Yes, it is public corruption. Yes, it is sordid.


The U.S. Attorney pursuing the case is Christopher Christie, a Republican conservative – tried and true.


The Governor, James E. McGreevey, is a liberal Democrat.


The financial contributor, now under indictment, is Charles Kushner.


You have to hand it to Christie. Of course, there are the charges of political motivation.


Christie, they say, wants to be Governor.


But Christie is an equal opportunity prosecutor of public corruption.


Last year, he nailed former Essex County Executive James W. Treffinger, a Republican. Trefflinger pled guilty to obstruction of justice.


To derail the investigation of his granite company, Treffinger sought to get himself appointed US attorney. He was recorded as saying that there are ''plenty of mobsters to go after – you
don't have to go after all these poor politicians trying to ply their trade."


Christie believes that the political criminal is in many ways ''worse than the street criminal because the street criminal never pretends to be anything but what he or she is.”


But while public corruption has been the name of the game in New Jersey almost forever, Christie has also pursued major corporations for pollution, fraud, and false claims against the government.



In short, Christie has reinvigorated a formerly sleepy office.


Christie graduated from Seton Hall University Law School in 1987.


He then signed on with the Cranford, New Jersey law firm of Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci, where he became partner.


President Bush appointed Christie to be U.S. Attorney for New Jersey in December 2001.


Maybe he’s cracking down on corporate crime and corruption because he wants to be Governor of New Jersey.


Maybe he’s doing it because it’s his job.


Whatever the motivation, public corruption in New Jersey ain’t going away anytime soon. And better to have a Christopher Christie than someone who’s asleep at the switch.

The guy sounds like a real sleeze. His sister and brother-in-law were prepared to testify that he'd been violating campaign finance laws by contributing money in relatives' names. So he hired a call girl to seduce the brother-in-law, tape it, and send the tape to the wife. Yucch.

My concern is that he's a major Democratic contributor and could be used to taint a lot of New Jersey and New York Democrats. I've been wondering if there's any way to preemptively forestall that.

That Chris Christie wants to be governor. A one-term Morris County Freeholder, Christie made his political bones by being a big-money donation bundler to the county, state and national repuke parties. He is not at all shy about his aspirations.

Christie started going after McGreevey from Day One as US Attorney.

Oh, and he ain't really qualified for the job.

Once again: Look for Christie's personal touch all over this thing, once the facts are known.

Two Words: Political. Hack.

25. You Shouldn't Cheer

This is very, very, very foolish- this whole "I resign in November" business.

From everything we've seen, there's a lot more too this- a lot of corruption, and a lot of other bizarre stuff.

Remember, he put this guy in charge of Homeland Security for the ENTIRE STATE. You don't think that'll come up? When we try to make points on Homeland Security, at least one Republican will respond, "at least we don't put our gay lovers in charge of it."

McGreevey can be used to attack the entire Democratic Party as untrustworthy on the issue- "Democrats only support homeland security because it means jobs for their boyfriends" and the like.

Having him in office through November could, if things turn bad, put New Jersey in play. Truly in play- and all of our work in West Virginia, New Hampshire, and New Mexico combined would be made worthless by such a thing, just for the sake of ensuring that a Democrat sits in the New Jersey Governor's chair for one year.
