Democrats Pressure McGreevey to Leave Soon

TRENTON, N.J. - High-level New Jersey Democrats said Sunday that pressure is building among members of Gov. James E. McGreevey's own party for him to step down before his announced Nov. 15 resignation date.

A senior administration official and a Democratic consultant, both speaking on condition of anonymity, said several top Democrats are worried an FBI (news - web sites) investigation into the governor's same-sex relationship with a former aide will expose more politically damaging details.

"There's a deepening concern that it will get uglier and more damaging to the party. It's pressure for sooner rather than later," the consultant said.

Since McGreevey admitted having an affair with another man and announced his resignation Thursday, Republicans have called on him to step down immediately to prompt a special election to complete his term, which expires in January 2006.

Corzine's doing a good job as one of our senators. Who would replace him? Another democrat? Who exactly?

11. South Jersey Dems.

This could be a move against Codey(Essex County) getting in there and getting the inside track in the election, elbowing out Andrews. Andrews is not a SJ "Machine" Dem, but they will take what they can get.

There is a lot of tension, vis a vis North Jersey and South Jersey.

It also puts Corzine at a disadvantage, which would be another Andrews advantage. Corzine would have to scramble like the dickens and might not make the cut. Lotsa things on his plate. He's North Jersey, too.

At this point, the repukes have what? Schundler(Damaged goods...) and Lance(Uhhh...just "may" have the same problem as McG...). Otherwise, you can be sure the right might want to try to run some chuucklehead. Doherty(Brain Damaged-Hunterdon/Warren) has said he wants to run for Governor, supposedly, but no one is really sure. The laughter drowned out his full statement.

The DSC will be working to squash this tommorrow.

The Democratic Party in NJ is run by a bunch of county leaders, many of whom hate each other. McG screwed over a couple of them in the past year or two, and grudges in NJ are legendary.

The deal is that if he quits sometime in September (I forget the exact date) a special election is called. If he quits after that, the Senate President serves the term until next year, when the regular election is held.

So, naturally, Republicans want him out now, and would try to get in this November. Some Democrats feel the same way, but most would want him to wait until at least after the deadline. An election for Governor at this poiint would be a bit dicey.

So, why wait until November?

Well, in NJ the Governor picks legislature leadership spots, and makes a vast number of other appointments. So... it makes a certain amount of sense for McG to wait until after the election to pay off a few debts.

This is Joisey, after all, where Machiavelli rules.

The potential "ugliness" of any "further" details is all the more reason why McGreevey should stay put until after the election. I don't doubt that McGreevey has enemies within the party, and I realize the Dems may be in for further disgrace. But is it truly worth taking the risk of losing the governership to a Republican when the deputy governor would be safe until 2006?

Someone here suggested that South Jersey democrats are behind this. To want to take a gamble like that, they'd HAVE to be from around Atlantic City!

that are constantly endorsing the GOP no matter what, whether they are in New Jersey asking that McGreevey steps down now, or in Washington saying that Porter Goss should be confirmed as CIA Director.

This is another example of no difference between the two parties!
