WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), once courted by Democrat presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), is emerging as a major force in the re-election campaign of President Bush (news - web sites), who vanquished McCain in the 2000 Republican primary.

Republican officials said plans are in the works for McCain to appear with Bush on the campaign trail during the week of the Republican convention in New York that will nominate Bush for a second term. Then the plan is for them to campaign together immediately after the convention.

"It helps having him stand by my side," Bush said during a stop with McCain in Niceville, Florida, last week.

Just this week he voiced concerns about Bush's plan to bring home up to 70,000 U.S. troops over 10 years from bases overseas. "I hope as some critics allege this is not a retreat to 'Fortress America,"' he said.

4. I think it is interesting the McCain is viewed as good for Bush

I actually voted in that primary and voted for McCain because I thought he would be a good president....at the time...

But seeing that he is for Bush and how they have raped and pillaged him and he goes back for more hurt and harm..... I could never vote for the man again......

So I might have been a undecided voter in 2000 had McCain won their nomination....I voted for Gore.....But today and any time in the future...if McCain is running for something I would vote against him.....

Wonder if there are other undecided who see that clearly too and that McCain is actually helping them go for Kerry...

...you express my exact reasons why I supported McCain in 2000, and why I am so puzzled and angry at his about-face today. It seems to me that the bond among veterans, especially those who were injured in action, should mean more than one's political ambitions (whatever they may be) or even political party loyalties.

I know I'm probably the 1,000th person to ask this here: Why is John McCain so joined at the hip with Bush?

He doesn't necessarily have to leave the party to make his feelings known about the Swifties -- just a distancing from Bush and a repeated call for the administration to denounce the ads would do.

McCain went through the same type of shit...yet, there he is, right up there next to George. One more thing I just don't get about this election year.

NPR used this spin right after Edwards was selected. Makes Edwards seem the second choice at best.

I don't believe Kerry "courted" McCain. I believe he might've discussed the option fo truly upsetting the applecart with a bipartison ticket.

There's gotta be something that somebody has on McCain. How could anybody, especially one as strong as McCain, take the crap dished out at him by his fellow GOPers and then come snuggling up to help?

I think there is a good possibility that McCain is going to make the mistake of his lifetime and take Cheney's place on Bush's ticket. Bush's motivation: Polls show Cheney is hurting the Repub. ticket, and McCain would draw a lot of voters. A last minute switch would create some excitement and give the ailing Bush campaign an upward swing in the polls. McCain's motivation: ambition, but also a naive belief that he can have a moderating effect on the Bush administration and maybe run for president later.

Of course, McCain would be a fool to tie his wagon to Bush's star. Bush is the most corrupt person who has ever lived in the White House -- worse than Nixon. And Bush is not going to be able to hide his corruption from the American people forever. When the truth comes out, McCain will stink along with the rest of the Bush supporters. As a matter of fact, knowing how these things work, McCain will probably stink more than anyone as the Bush machine pushes the blame on McCain for things he had little to do with. Once McCain has lost his integrity, he has lost everything.

I don't know, of course, but I suspect that Kerry figured out McCain's game months ago. My theory: When Kerry "asked" McCain to run, he did not expect McCain to say yes. He was feeling McCain out about McCain's take on Bush and whether McCain's ambition was blinding him to the dangers of supporting/joining Bush. In short, Kerry was "casing" McCain out. Kerry is a clever strategist, an ace investigator. He knows how to read people and figure out what they are thinking. Kerry is probably ready for McCain's betrayal.
