Four States Deny Ballot Access to Nader

WASHINGTON - Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites) a suffered setbacks this week as election officials in Virginia, Maryland, Illinois and Missouri all denied him access to state ballots this fall.



In each case, officials said Nader campaign workers either did not submit enough valid signatures on ballot petitions or failed to follow proper procedures.


On Friday, Virginia's election board secretary, Jean Jensen, said Nader workers failed to meet state requirements that the signatures be grouped according to congressional district, and then by localities within each of the 11 districts.


"The State Board of Elections must apply the rules to all parties, and there was no reason to deviate from that policy," Jensen said.


The decision was a victory for John Kerry (news - web sites)'s campaign and for Virginia Democrats who believe even modest support for Nader could reduce Kerry's votes — and the party's chance of winning a presidential race in the state for the first time in 40 years.

should adopt a "battleground state only policy" when it comes to fighting Nader's ballot access.

In this case, fight Missouri and Virginia and give him Maryland and Illinois.

I'm most pissed that he's on the ballot in the upper midwest battleground states which Gore won by less than 1% (MN, but IA and WI in particuar).

Unfortunately he's also on the ballot in WV and AR...I don't know about OH and MI though.

his own EGO. I lost respect for him long ago. He doesn't give a F*** (can you use that word on this forum?) about the war or anything else. It's all about power.

If he wanted to make a difference, get a third party going, he'd run for Congress in a small, progressive area where he had a chance of getting elected. But how much TV coverage would he get?

if people want to vote Kerry, they will vote Kerry; if they don't, they won't. The fact that Nader is off the ballot doesn't mean that he won't get write-in votes, nor does it mean that those who would ordinarily vote for him will suddenly decide to vote Kerry.

Seems almost every week I hear about another state where he failed to get on, or was having real trouble. I didn't keep track of this info. Does anybody know which states he DID qualify to get on for Nov?
