FLORENCE, Ala. -- Alabama Gov. Bob Riley told a Republican breakfast that President Bush's re-election will change the U.S. Supreme Court, described by the governor as "very liberal." ..

Riley said because the next president could appoint up to three Supreme Court justices, the coming years could be a turning point for the Republican Party if Bush is re-elected.

"This is the greatest opportunity we will have to return to the value set that makes us unique in the world," Riley said.

Riley, a former congressman, blamed the "very liberal Supreme Court" for letting the country degenerate over the past few decades. ..

the supreme court decides which laws will be allowed. If you want sexuality and abortion criminalized, and seperation of church and state thrown out the window, go on saying it doesn't matter. If we had a better supreme court, Bush* wouldn't even be president, how the hell can you say it doesn't matter?

For four years conservative Republicans have controlled the White House, the Supreme Court, and both Houses of Congress. What are they waiting for?

Could it be that if they overturn Roe v Wade they will lose their single biggest wedge issue?

You just never know what those justices will do once they are confirmed with a lifetime appointment and they put on that black robe. A lot of people thought O'Connor, Kennedy, and Souter (all Reagan-Bush appointees) would be good cosnervatives. They were not.

14. This Is What Scares Me

Just what does Riley mean when he says the Supreme Court has "degenerated" over the past few decades? Is he talking about Civil Rights?

They are trying to outlaw abortion, they are just taking small steps to not alienate moderates. Some of their laws are being challenged right now, and what court will hear them? This matters.

First, Bush wants a fetus to be eligible for C.H.I.P.S. (Childrens' Health Insurance Program - provides health insurance to children of low income parents) Now this sounds like a good thing on the surface, providing pre-natal care and why ever would the pro-choice crowd object? Then, there's the so called partial-birth abortion ban which when they described the procedure it really sounds awful. They banned the procedure though, there was no specification of when in the gestation period it was done, could be anytime. Also, there was no provision to protect the vessel's (oh, mother's) health. They said it would never be necessary, but then, what would have been the big deal about having it for reassurance? And let us not forget the Lacey's Law, named after a murdered woman in California, the baby to be also dying. The thing is, Lacey was 8 months pregnant and the law applies to any point in gestation, as if there is no difference between a two week fetus, a thirty-eight week fetus and a three year old.

As for the next wedge issue for the Republicans, how about outlawing birth control?
