As of Monday, Aug. 23, 958 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 716 died as a result of hostile action and 242 died of non-hostile causes.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld delivered a ringing defense of the nation's Iraq policy today in Chicago.

I heard a number quoted over the weekend by some pollsters that 20% of the US casualties in Iraq were Latinos, so I checked on the site link you gave. You can bring up the lists by state. For TX that number is a lot higher than 20% just on quick inspection. It's higher than 50%. Based on last name alone which of course is not 100% accurate 45 of the 82 TX casualties have Hispanic surnames.

of the Iraqi turnover, at the end of June?

These well under 1000 numbers, which just creep up ever so slightly every other day, just seem so damned implausible to me.

But then I think we've lost many more than that anyway. But still, you get my drift. We know that before the war Americans were polled as to how many casualties would be "too many" to support the war, and the magic number was -- TA DA!! -- 1000. Can't go over 1000 until after the election, can we?

854 Americans had died, and 972 total coalition soldiers had died.

Since the turnover, 111 Americans have died, and 124 total coalition troops have died.

Many of the incidents for August are duplicates, and the site often treats "multi-national force" personnel as if they were American. I don't trust it, and I do trust icasualties, which has no unidentified releases older than 3 or 4 days. I don't think the global security site is accurate.

But it is a "conservative' site and they do separate coalition troops from U.S. troops. The main discrepency between other official numbers and theirs is that they include 41 individuals reported killed but unidentified.

But surely this is but an idle exercise. Ten times and more Iraqi's have been killed.

So if you include the suicides (indirectly resulting from serving in Iraq), we are over 1,000.

Suicides are classed with general "non-hostile gunshot wounds" and other "non-hostile" deaths in order to reduce the stigma, but they have surely been named along with the other identified deaths.

Moreover, your theory does not match up with the actual "unidentifieds" appearing on the site.

Today's paper had an op-ed piece about this subject and the author actually said that the majority of Iraqis were grateful. I was amazed that anyone could believe such a thing!
