James R. Schlesinger, head of an independent panel investigating prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, said Tuesday a resignation by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld would be a mistake.

Asked in a briefing to reporters if Rumsfeld should resign, Schlesinger said such a resignation "would be a boon to all" enemies of the U.S. and would be a " misfortune" if Rumsfeld were to take that course. ..

Schlesinger served as Secretary of Defense for Presidents Nixon and Ford. Brown was Secretary of Defense for President Carter, and Fowler is a former Congresswoman and former senior member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Horner, a retired Air Force general, led the air campaign in the 1991 Iraq war.

7. Thanks to Rummy being "too busy" to attend to his responsibilities

8. Schlesinger also excused torture

He said that the aggressiveness of the techniques used should be measured against the significance of the intelligence to be gained. In other words he repeated the rationalisation that if American lives might be saved, aggressive techniques could be used. And he excused the fact that the techniques officially approved, like threatening with guard dogs, breach the Geneva Convention by saying this was a "new" kind of war. The admin must be delighted - he thinks just like them.

9. Given Rumsfeld utter failure

To quickly address this issue BEFORE it got so out of hand - I can't help but think that Rumsfeld himself is acting like an enemy of the USA...certainly an enemy of her reputation worldwide.
