Kerry does ``The Daily Show'

After weeks of charge and countercharge in the presidential campaign, comedian Jon Stewart tried Tuesday to get to the bottom of the debate over Democrat John Kerry's military service in Vietnam.

"I understand apparently you were never in Vietnam?" asked Stewart, host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

"That's what I understand, too, but I'm trying to find out what happened," Kerry joked. ..

Kerry offered an interesting observation on life as a presidential candidate.

"You'd be amazed at the number of people who want to introduce themselves to you in the men's room," he said. "It's the most bizarre part of this entire thing."

He was very good, showed the "human, nice guy side" of John Kerry and as far as guests go he did very well with Jon Stewart, some guests get thrown off guard so much they don't know what to say.

14. Back in the day...

it was a fair amount of work to tape delay the network feeds. So, there were two feeds -- out of New York, and out of LA. Central time got the New York feed (one hour earlier); Mountain time got the LA feed (one hour later).

It's easier to tape delay these days, but I guess they're either used to it or they like it.

...he reached an audience that watches The Daily Show more than other "conventional" news programs. (18-30-year-old demographics).

I thought he was great, especially going profile-a-profile with Stewart.

Kerry seems like such an intelligent, compassionate, and decent man compared to Bush. Kerry gives me hope that all is not lost.

...and I'll admit I was a bit worried about Kerry doing the Daily Show. I've seen people I thought were pretty bright look like idiots. That show can kill a loser in fifteen seconds flat if they come off anything other than sincere.

Guess Kerry ain't a loser. :)

This was no Clinton on the Arsenio Hall moment, but Kerry did a good job appearing relaxed and approachable. He spent a little too much time in "campaign mode" for my tastes, but he managed to joke around and not appear too stiff.

Also, I think Jon Stewart liked him; I watch this show a lot and you can really tell when JS gets along with someone or when he's just doing the interview thing pro-forma.

I'm not sure how much this appearance will help Kerry... seems to me that most people who watch TDSWJS are already likely Kerry supporters. But it certainly didn't hurt.

Also, not related to Kerry per se, but the moment of zen showing Stephen Colbert and his daughter joking around on camera was hilarious and cute.

30. I've seen how Stewart can take down somebody who's sucking up ...

Like that glad-handing GOP guy who tried to bribe him with a gift (ostensibly for Jon's son). That kind of thing can be deadly for an interviewer, because more often than not you'd look like a heel if you don't "play nice" to reciprocate ... but Jon deftly let the audience see that the guest wasn't sincere.

In this case -- I don't think Jon gave Kerry a free pass, even though it was a friendly interview -- but I got the impression that he does like and respect Kerry.

31. Sorry to rain on the parade but Kerry could have done better

OK, he was relaxed (almost a little too relaxed) and he let some things slide. He should have pounced on and debunked the notion that Teresa Heinz Kerry is still "married" to the Heinz Corp. He said in reference to the "swift boat" smear that he had "experienced worse" in the political arena - some personal details would have been nice. He drifted into the standard "Bush can't talk about the issues" line not once but several times. It got a little boring.

I know it's a comedy show so we can't worry about this performance too much. Kerry did smile constantly but he didn't have anything witty to say. When Clinton was on the Daily Show it was a nearly a full 1/2 hour of straight and interesting talk from the former President. I fault Stewart a bit in treating Kerry less seriously than he did Clinton.

Overall, Kerry did C+ maybe B-. In terms of the overall campaign he did no harm. Kerry is a serious man for a serious time and he comes across much better on a real news interview with policy and vision discussion.

He did a good job although I disagree entirely with his desire to wage war in Iraq (the only problem with the war is that it is waged wrong) and I disagree entirely with him saying Dubya is a good debater because his pet media always declares him the winner no matter what comes out of his mouth.

When will Kerry acknowledge what the entire world knows...the war was illegal, unethical and immoral...both the Iraq and the Afghan oil wars

was on tonight. Stewart repeatedly shot down the Kerry voted for invading Iraq point. Ed kept trying to go back to it, and Stewart kept shooting it down. Pretty entertaining actually.

Shoot down the "Kerry voted for war" bit...he stated that he disagreed w/Kerry's vote for authorization....Repeating that even though Kerry voted to give Bush authority...BUSH TOOK US TO IRAQ!

He also said Gillespie needs to stop the 'voted for war didn't show up at intelligence meetings' cuz it's not the same issue...
