Kerry leads Bush 49% to 39%, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. Kerry's support was little changed from an Aug. 4 Quinnipiac poll, in which he led Bush 49% to 36%. The poll has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Of the 887 registered voters polled from Aug. 19-23, 7% said they would be less likely to vote for Kerry because of McGreevey's Aug. 12 announcement that he was gay, had an extramarital affair with another man and would resign on Nov. 15. However, 90% said the resignation would not make a difference.
"The turmoil in New Jersey, including the resignation of Governor McGreevey, has had no impact on Sen. Kerry's support in the state. The Democratic contender still enjoys a double-digit lead, as would be expected in a traditionally Democratic state such as New Jersey," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Richards added that the controversy over Kerry's Vietnam record and his subsequent protest of the war has had no effect in New Jersey, most likely because ads challenging his service were not aired in the state. ..
