Hamburg Court Delays 9/11 Trial by One Week
HAMBURG, Germany (Reuters) - A German court ordered on Tuesday a week's delay in the trial of Mounir El Motassadeq, a Moroccan accused of aiding the Sept. 11 attacks, allowing time to brief a replacement for a defense lawyer hurt in an accident.
Gerhard Strate, a lawyer who has represented Motassadeq in the past, agreed to join in his defense after Josef Graessle-Muenscher was injured in a weekend motorcycle accident.
The court rejected an application from Motassadeq's defense team for the case to be restarted, ruling that a one-week delay was sufficient for the new lawyer to prepare.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed when al Qaeda teams used hijacked planes to attack U.S. cities on Sept. 11, 2001.
