Bush Campaign Files Lawsuit Against FEC

NEW YORK - President Bush (news - web sites)'s campaign asked a court Wednesday to force the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites) to act on its complaints against anti-Bush groups spending millions of dollars in the presidential race, arguing that the FEC is failing to do its job.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, the campaign argued that the FEC is taking too long to address what the campaign calls illegal spending of corporate, union and big individual donations to influence the presidential race. Its lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction that would force the commission to act on its March complaint within 30 days. After that, the campaign could sue to block the groups' activities through court action rather than relying on the FEC.

"To prevent these 527s from continuing to violate federal election laws, we have asked the federal court to step in and order the FEC to act," said Tom Josefiak, general counsel for the Bush-Cheney campaign.

Outside groups trying to deny Bush a second term have spent more than $60 million on advertising, far outstripping organizations sympathetic to the president that have vowed a late campaign drive to match their rivals.

... all the "language" that comes out of the GOP's mouth is doublespeak and coded phrases. Such as "Family Values" means "anti-gay" or "anti-choice" depending on the context.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It almost seems like The Onion wrote this. The words "blind" "hypocrite" "oblivious" come to mind. Who signed the law that created 527s to begin with? There is a heck of a lot of difference between SBVT and MoveON. I'm a MoveON member and I donate my 25 bucks here and there, not once have I been offered a high level job with the DNC. I'm at a total loss here seeing this obvious bulls**t legal ploy here.

Swift Boat Vet Got $40M Contract From Bush


The Bush White House has denied any connection to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth1 - the group that has been airing factually unsupportable smear ads against Sen. John Kerry's war record. But a new report today shows that one of the key accusers in the smear ads was a lobbyist for a company that recently received a massive federal contract from the Bush administration.

As the Washington Post reports, Rear Admiral William L. Schachte Jr., the man who claims Kerry was not under fire when he received his first Purple Heart, is a top lobbyist for a defense contractor that recently won a $40 million grant from the Bush administration. According to a March 18 legal filing by Schachte's firm, Blank Rome, Schachte was one of the lobbyists working for FastShip's effort to secure federal contracts.2 On Feb. 2, FastShip announced the Bush administration had awarded it $40 million.3

Schachte has other connections to the Bush administration. The Washington Post notes David Norcross, Schachte's colleague in the Washington office of Blank Rome, is chairman of this week's Republican convention in New York.4 Records show that Schachte gave $1,000 to Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns.5 Additionally, Schachte helped organize veterans' efforts against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and for Bush in the 2000 South Carolina primary.6S

That was the charge the Repubs were laying at Kerry's feet when he filed a complaint when the FEC. Also, complaining about big business financing of these 527s is laughable coming from this bunch of corporate raiders.
