Bush matriarch agonizes through campaign

Her son has said he doesn't think this campaign is particularly ugly, but she disagrees. "They're using a word I think is a terrible word. I don't hate anybody. And if you'll pardon my saying so, I think the press is fanning (the notion that) 'more people hate George Bush.' Of course, nobody 'likes' John Kerry (news - web sites) is what we hear, but George is hated. That just isn't true. They may dislike him, they may not agree with him, but to use that word, it's a terrible word, and that really hurts me."

She shares none of this with the president, though. "I tell him he's great, his mother loves him and I tease him," she said. If a member of the extended family dares to quiz him about the campaign or world events, she said, "We get on them, as they say in West Texas, like ugly on an ape."
