GALLUP: Cheney’s Popularity at New Low
Cheney’s Popularity at New Low
Vice president has 45% unfavorable rating

by Jeffrey M. Jones

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- Vice President Dick Cheney grabs the spotlight at the Republican National Convention tonight to accept the party's nomination for a second term. In addition to officially beginning his quest for four more years as the second-highest-ranking officeholder in the United States, Cheney has an opportunity to boost his declining popularity. A new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds Cheney's popularity ratings at a new low, with about as many Americans rating him unfavorably as favorably. Not surprisingly, views of Cheney are sharply partisan, with Republicans generally viewing him positively and Democrats negatively. The public is also divided as to whether Cheney has given President Bush good or bad advice over the last four years. Cheney has a lower favorability rating than Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards, and when the poll pits the two against each other in a hypothetical election for vice president, Edwards prevails.

Cheney Favorable Ratings

The poll, conducted Aug. 23-25, finds 44% of Americans with a favorable view and 45% with an unfavorable view of the vice president. This is the first time that Cheney does not have a higher favorable than unfavorable rating in a Gallup Poll. Until this year, Cheney's favorable ratings had always been above 50% since he took office in January 2001. The decline could be attributed to typically more partisan views of politicians in an election year, as well as some controversy about Cheney's role in the Bush administration.

22. Those numbers are suspect--
Just earlier today, the reporters were talking about numbers in the twenties. and one had him at 18%. Too much good shit happening right now for anything to be accurate, no matter the source.

8. "He said a very bad word." You can probable attribute some of this to...
...that little gir from Oakland's speech at the Democratic convention.

9. Of course, if you watch TV you'd think McCain was the VP
I hardly see Cheney with Bush anymore... The only peep I hear from him is either during fundraising, or repeating Iraq/WMD or Iraq/Al Queada nonsense.

Of course, I'm sure that's intentional.

13. on the message boards yesterday
at atrios someone was linking to a horoscope site where the author claimed on authority from a very close insider that cheney is out and mccain is in...of course it's just an internet rumor, but i'm amazed at how often i read it.

and i don't believe cheney has more than 25% support, and that's pushing it. i mean, who could like him? what has he done for anyone other than himself and his self hating daughter?

we'll see soon enough, i suppose.

16. Has Zogby polled this?
I find it very hard to believe that he garners that much approval. This is fishy. And you can't even compare Edwards to him. Edwards has smarts and class. Cheney has neither.

No-one will assassinate Bush because Cheney with full power would
be everyone's darkest nightmare.

23. I thought I heard his pop was at 35% a few month ago?
Good lord, did it go UP? I don't remember where I heard this, but I would guess it was CNN, or MSNBC. This was back when the rumors were flying about Cheney not being the candidate this year, and just before he, and shrub said they were a team.
