GOP rips Daschle for ad with Bush

Senate Republicans are infuriated that their arch nemesis, Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), has released a TV campaign ad that shows President Bush embracing the minority leader.

Republicans believe that the ad of Daschle and Bush warmly embracing on the floor of the House shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, reveals that the South Dakota senator is in an uphill battle to retain his seat. At the time it occurred — right after Bush delivered a speech to a joint session of Congress — the televised hug was considered a sign of national political unity. Now, its use in an ad is drawing howls of GOP protest.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) chairman, Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), said yesterday that knocking off Daschle would be equivalent to picking up three Senate seats. Majority Leader Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) eschewed Senate protocol this year by campaigning against his counterpart in Daschle’s home state.

We need a Senate Leader who is a strong Dem from a safe seat. Daschle just can't be as effective as he should be.

He has to play to his home state too much to do us any good. Hence, the wishy-washy impression many of us have of him.

But on the other hand, his being Democratic leader makes that particular seat easier to defend. But I strongly prefer the leader of house and senate caucuses being from a "safe" seat. Pelosi had a safer seat than Gephardt, for instance. She does not have to worry about her own campaign whatsoever, and that's probably a good thing.
