CU student and former marine appears in new anti-Bush ad
KUSA-TV

A new national advertisement criticizing President Bush features a Marine sergeant from Boulder.

The ad, paid for by MoveOn.org, claims the president lied about the reasons for the war in Iraq.

Marine Sergeant, Lee Buttrill, voted for Bush in 2000, but he will not repeat his vote in November. Buttrill says he and other men and women he served with feel betrayed by the Bush administration. ..

"I support those guys over there, but I thought we were really misled in terms of the reason we were given," he said. ..

1. I'm sure the "Marine Sergeants for Truth" 527 will be formed soon.
Stick to your guns Lee. There's more of us than you think.

11. It's 'free market' economics at work.
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 10:37 AM by TahitiNut
When the supply of bullets and bullet-proof vests are 'privatized,' the supply will never meet or exceed the demand. Under a theoretical 'free market,' a supply that meets or exceeds demand is an indication of overcapacity. The last thing a predatory capitalist ever wants is an operating production capacity that exceeds demand. (Some idle production capacity is desirable to stave off competitive threats with tactical increases/decreases.) That's an expense without a corresponding revenue - which erodes profits. It's far, far "better" to keep the supply below the demand - denying the 'consumer' base total satisfaction and driving prices higher. It's effective in keeping other suppliers from entering the market, too. When another supplier contemplates entering a market, they have to evaluate the demand. If the demand doesn't warrant the additional capacity they'd bring to the market, they'll not get financing or support of any kind. Indeed, existing suppliers manage their production to keep the supply just below the demand for exactly this reason. A 'free market' depends on victims. When the goods and services are critical to human life, the profits are enormous. This is the fundamental argument for the 'socialization' of industries critical to the public welfare. If there's an industry that the nation cannot do without, it's a legitimate candidate for nationalization. When there's a single corporation in such an industry whose failure would cripple the nation, it's an overwhelming candidate for nationalization. This is part of what "Anti-Trust" laws are about: preventing any single company from becoming so critical to any industry that its nationalization would be necessary for national security.

2. Hmm
Interesting choice for a Moveon ad, with all the scandal at CU-Boulder football program...

Not that it's bad..

4. So much for Mr Buttrill's chances of ever running for office
Doesn't he know that speaking out against government policy, even an unjustified catastrophic war, is wrong?

5. Here again MoveOn is talking about what the GOP wants to talk about
What is with that? Always on the defensive, never on the attack.

There is so much more which most Americans care about such as jobs, education and healthcare. But there MoveOn is talking about fear and terror, Bush's game.

6. not at all--this is one in a series of "disgruntled Rethuglicon" ads
that MoveOn is doing. Personally I think they are pretty powerful: ordinary people who voted for Bush in 2000 explaining why they won't repeat that mistake.

7. Bush wants to talk about Iraq? BRING IT ON!
The anti-Iraq-war contigent has been proven right time and again. The war is a disaster and all Bush's bullshit reasons have been exposed as lies. War and terror are Bush's biggest weakness. Please, let's talk about it.

8. I admire this guy, but I shudder...
...to think what will become of his career. Unfortunately, liberals like us are rare in the military, and even more so in the Marines. I hope people who don't know what military culture is like truly appreciate what this guy is doing by sticking his neck out like this.

9. Do they give you a hard time?
Is it the officers or fellow enlisted personnel or both?

I actually tried to volunteer for the Army in Nov.2002, but got turned down halfway through the interview when I told the recruiter I was taking Paxil. I've always wondered how my being a Democrat would have been viewed by fellow soldiers.

10. Definitely both, but...
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 10:32 AM by scottknapper
...I don't get a great deal of flack about my political views. I think that's due largely in part to the community I work in (Cryptology, normally pretty smart people). He's a Marine, and having worked closely with marines throughout my 13 years of service, I've come to realize that they don't like their guys taking a strong stance on anything that's not directly related to the Marine Corps. And you never, ever, ever speak badly about, or criticize a superior NCO or Officer (That's the case in most services, but we all do it.), which is what he's basically done here. If he's still in the service, I very seriously doubt he will be for much longer. It's sad what they do sometimes. It's Officers and enlisted both, but in the marines, a motivated Captain (O-3) can get someone kicked out almost at will.

I just noticed the thread said, "Former Marine...", so apparently he's out.
