Talking about the big crowds he's drawn in Iowa, Bush said: "I believe something is going on here in the hinterlands, in the heartland, that is going to mean a victory come November ..."

Iowans from both parties seemed peeved by the characterization. Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Gordon Fischer said it was insulting. Iowa's senior Republican, Senator Charles Grassley, heard about the comment while attending the G.O.P. convention in New York. Grassley says Iowans are blessed to be in the hinterlands, and he's especially sure of that after three days in the congestion of New York City.

Much as I find Smirks every utterance distasteful, I can't find much to get riled about in this comment, even if I were an Iowan. I mean, c'mon, they're "Cornhuskers" and plain folk from the midwest. Nothing wrong with that, unless, of course, you don't know what "hinterland" means and you're prone to a paranoid persecution complex.

"Hinterland" is often used as a perjorative, followed by the inflammatory "plain folk," a term you also used.

We're far from plain in Iowa.

Just so you know, Iowa has the highest literacy rate in the nation, which would make you from some place where people aren't as good at doing really plain things like ... mmmm ... reading.

As for popular culture, it involves a little more than standing in front of the house, pitchfork in hand, waiting for Grant Wood -- the adolescent pop/punk music universe has been temporarily centered here. Wasn't that a member of the Des Moines band "Slipknot," just driving by my house today in his bright red Ferrari? Only kids from Iowa would figure out if they wore masks on stage they wouldn't have to look like punkers all the time.

We know about the world, too. Like we knew who the next Democratic Presidential nominee would be for the 2004 election before anybody else did. In fact, shortly before the world knew Howard Dean as a screaming lunatic, we were able to figure out he was a screaming lunatic. Have you seen the caucus results from that night?

I've lived in large cities, and prior to settling in Iowa I spent a year touring North America on my motorcycle. It was an interesting experience. I met a very large number of friendly and interesting people all around the country. And in Iowa, I found the highest concentration, of friendly, intellegent, engaging and, yes, literate people of all.

In LA, I found the highest concentration of street people with scripts optioned to Speilberg, and on the east coast, the highest concentrations of arrogant, self-important, really big assholes. Why don't you climb back into yours with your New Yorker magazine cover map of the United States? My experience with many east coasters is that there is plenty of room for it up there.

In German "Hinterland" would mean "land behind/beyond." Especially "behind." This then has a double meaning as in being behind technologically and culturally. The meaning is mostly geographical but the use of the word "hinter" hints at the plac in question being "underdeveloped."
