The head of the Arms Control Association and a former senior U.S. official accused the Bush administration on Thursday of trying to derail a proposed international ban on production of material used to make nuclear weapons.

Daryl G. Kimball, executive director of the private research group, said the administration's position that airtight safeguards against cheating could not be found was "something of a poison pill."

"We do not agree that this treaty is not effectively verifiable," Kimball said at a news conference.

Robert J. Einhorn, a former assistant secretary of state for nonproliferation, said the administration was determined to kill any prospect of a treaty emerging from a 65-nation conference in Geneva. ..

An international ban on the products to make nuclear weapons would also expect the USA's ratification, thus participation. Seen as bush has portrayed himself as such a warrior against (illegal)nukes.

Non-ratification would make bush seriously lose face and credibility in the eyes of the world's population (and let's face it: he's already riding on empty).

Cooperation would also mean disarmament, which in the long run could seriously set back the military supremacy of the USA and would also drain a lot of money out of the military-industrial complex.

Ratification without cooperation would have the same effect as the first.

So they choose to suppress such a ban from ever coming into existence anyway they see fit.

3. Um, some nuclear reactors can use plutonium too.

It would be a mistake not to use seperated plutonium from spent uranium.
