Oh my, I have got to admit it, I am loving this one. Watching Keyes has been one of the funniest things I've ever seen here in Illinois politics. For those of us living here, politics really is more of a blood sport than anything else. Keyes has provided that much needed comedic break. Kinda like the rodeo clowns...

I actually think he's right---at least about not being able to back away from his wild theoretical condemnation of all gay people just because they named a specific individual whose father happens to be the Republican Vice President.

Of course, his blanket "selfish hedonists" statement is utterly loathesome anyway.

But then again, so is the GOP platform.

26. It is a huge mistake to marginalize Keyes as a wacky extremist.

This is exactly what moderate republicans who basically are decent people do to justify their membership and support of the republican party. Millions of republicans say Keyes is in no way typical of the republican party and his hate filled rants do not represent many other republicans. They gently mock him as an extremist with no influence or power in the party.

But in fact Keyes' views are held by even more millions of republicans who make up a large percentage of the republican base. Those republicans who completely agree with Keyes are the winning difference for the republican party and they exercise a great deal of control, almost total control, over the party. The moderate republicans tolerate it because they think republicans like Keyes are amusing in a quaint way. If either the moderate republicans or the Keyes republicans left the party it would no longer be competitive in many States and nationally.
