Large Explosion Reported in Northern Part of North Korea; No Word on Fatalities or Injuries

SEOUL, South Korea Sept. 11, 2004 — A large explosion occurred in the northern part of North Korea on an important anniversary of the communist regime, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.

Citing an unidentified source in Beijing, Yonhap said the explosion happened on Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China. The damage and crater left by the explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county was big enough to be noticed by a satellite, the source said.

26. Mushroom Cloud does not equal nuclear bomb

Any large explosion can result in a mushroom shaped cloud. Unless someone detects radiation, it could be a large conventional explosion.

You could get a big one from a volcanic eruption, meteor impact, etc. But coming on a significant date makes it unlikely to be an accident or act of God.

I know the conventional MOAB bomb is large enough to create a big mushroom cloud.

Considering that we must be monitoring NK very closely it's interesting that this happened on Thursday and is only being reported now. A very large explosion would have been detected by civilian scientists.

survival against the US is to become nuclear powers. I used to work in the jail and the main reason the inmates made shanks was to protect themselves from the other inmates who had shanks. If it was a nuclear bomb the radiation would be easily detected. I won't believe it was a nuclear bomb until I see a report about radiation.

Big blast reported in North Korea


A big explosion rocked a northern province of North Korea near the border with China last week, South Korea's Yonhap new agency is reporting.

The blast on Thursday was seen from a satellite, Yonhap quoted an unnamed source in Beijing as saying.

The cause has yet to be determined, the source said.
